After you select the device, click Apply next to the Device drop-down, then click Connect next to the Tool drop-down menu. MPLAB® Integrated Programming Environment (IPE) will attempt to connect to the tool and the target device. If the tool successfully connects to both, you will see a message in the Output window indicating that the correct target device has been detected, as shown in the accompanying figure. Note that the Connect button is now changed to Disconnect.

For details on how to set up the programmer in the IPE, please refer to the "Setting up a Programmer" page.

If you select a device that does not match what is on the target board, then once the tool connects, a pop-up dialog box appears indicating the target device does not match the expected device ID. This example shows that the user selected PIC24FJ128GA008 and clicked Apply. However, the device on the board is PIC24FJ128GA010. This resulted in an MPLAB IPE pop-up dialog box showing the target device does not match the expected device on the board. You can click OK, select the correct device from the Device drop-down menu, then click Apply, and Connect again.
